Amigurumi – The Japanese Crochet Art

Are you lovers of Japanese culture just like me?

You might have already heard about the little dolls that are gaining popularity, called amigurumi (あみぐるみ – in Japanese hiragana). These amigurumi dolls can be inspired by animals, people, or even food! Anything the artisan imagines :). They are traditional Japanese dolls made using crochet or knitting, and they carry a kawaii (which means "cute" in Japanese) appearance.

The name comes from the combination of two words: amimono (which means crochet and knitting) and nuigurumi (which means stuffed plushie). This forms the name of this crochet art style.

Amigurumi are heavily inspired by chibi culture (which means "small" in Japanese) and the kawaii aesthetic. That’s why these little dolls often have big heads, rosy cheeks, cute outfits...

Amigurumi can be collected by both children (because of their innocent and cute essence) and otakus, since they can be made in the shape of anime characters, movie figures, or anything the artist's creativity allows.

There are many artisans who teach how to make these little dolls on YouTube channels, and many are sold online. One example is the artisan KashaCraft, who sells her creations on the Etsy platform.

Amigurumi are yet another adorable creation that Japan has to share with us—among many other cute and creative things!

Matta, ne! 😊
